Grace Period
Definition
A period after a payment is due during which you can still pay without penalty. Credit cards offer 21-25 day grace periods from statement closing to payment due date. Loans might have grace periods before first payment due.
Why It Matters
Understanding grace periods helps you avoid unnecessary interest charges. Paying within the grace period on a credit card means no interest. Paying after means interest on the full balance. Same with loan grace periods.
Example
Credit card statement closes on the 15th. You have a 25-day grace period until the 10th of next month to pay without interest. If you pay on the 8th: no interest. If you pay on the 15th: interest charged from statement close.
